EyeGauge: The smart way to make analog ships smart

The maritime industry, responsible for transporting close to 90% of global trade, faces mounting pressure to decarbonize and digitize. Yet, the sector grapples with outdated, analog equipment and fragmented data systems, making real-time monitoring and compliance with environmental regulations a daunting task. Only about 15% of the global merchant fleet is equipped with real-time data collection capabilities, leaving a vast majority reliant on manual reporting methods that are often inaccurate not to mention inefficient.


Enter EyeGauge, a Paris and Singapore-based startup founded in 2020 by Rodion Denisyuk, Viktoriia Kobenko, and Anton Zakharov. EyeGauge aims to bridge the digital divide in maritime operations by offering a non-invasive solution that transforms any vessel into a smart ship without the need for expensive retrofits.


 A Non-Invasive Solution for Maritime Digitalization

EyeGauge's Unified Fleet Data Platform leverages patented contactless technology to collect high-frequency, high-quality data from both analog and digital equipment onboard ships. To set up the technology, a ship’s crew simply needs to install cameras pointing at analog or digital gauges in the ship’s engine room and bridge. The captured feed then uses artificial intelligence to anaylze the displayed data and convert it into digital visualizations that is displayed on EyeGuage’s platform for crew and on-shore team members to review. This approach allows for seamless integration with existing machinery, enabling real-time monitoring of fuel consumption, emissions, and equipment performance. The data can then be analyzed to provide actionable insights, facilitating compliance with environmental regulations and improving operational efficiency.


In a pilot program with Cargill, EyeGauge successfully deployed its technology on two older bulk carriers, capturing live data from main engines, generators, and fuel systems. The installations were completed with minimal disruption, and the collected data was integrated into third-party analytical platforms, demonstrating the system's versatility and effectiveness.


 Funding and Recognition

EyeGauge has raised approximately $575,000 in funding, with its latest seed round closing in December 2023. Investors include Les Business Angels des Grandes Écoles, Paris Business Angels, Mer Angels, and PIER71, a Singapore-based maritime innovation platform . The company has also participated in accelerator programs such as ZEBOX and Safetytech Accelerator, further validating its innovative approach to maritime digitalization.


Navigating a Competitive Landscape

While EyeGauge offers a unique, non-intrusive solution, it operates in a competitive space with players like Bearing, SailPlan, and Wärtsilä, all offering various maritime analytics and digitalization tools . However, EyeGauge's focus on affordability and ease of installation sets it apart, particularly for operators of older vessels seeking to modernize without significant capital investment.
